## Health and cleaning

### Biosecurity plan

A set of habits that stop disease from moving between animals, farms and shows. Penn State puts observation at the start of its biosecurity plan and recommends explaining the plan to family and visitors. [Look before you check the box](https://showprepnotes.com/daily-round)

### Isolation

Keeping an animal apart from others. Penn State recommends isolating animals that have been away, as well as new or unhealthy animals. Agree the arrangement and duration with your veterinarian for the species and exposure. [The project continues after unloading](https://showprepnotes.com/return-home)

### Disease pathway

A way germs travel between places. Penn State identifies boots, trailers and equipment as pathways. [Pack a kit that does not share germs](https://showprepnotes.com/show-kit)

### Organic material

Dirt, manure, bedding and similar matter. Penn State notes it can protect pathogens, so cleaning has to come before disinfecting. Follow the product label and professional advice.

## Paperwork and records

### Exhibitor packet

The official rules and forms an organizer publishes for a show. Use this year's packet. Health documents, identification and arrival checks differ by event and species. [Read the current fair rules first](https://showprepnotes.com/fair-rules)

### Health documents

Papers some shows require for animals to enter, such as vaccination or health records. Pennsylvania's 2026 exhibitor guidance asks owners to follow veterinarian vaccination recommendations. Check your own event's rules.

### Project book

A dated record for each animal: identifier, source, arrival date, observations, expenses and official documents. A youth owner can make the observations while an adult checks instructions and deadlines. [A project record that tells the whole story](https://showprepnotes.com/project-book)

### Project budget

Planned spending kept separate from actual receipts. Enter the quote source and date for each estimate. Unknown costs are not zero costs. [Separate the estimate from the receipt](https://showprepnotes.com/project-budget)

## Teamwork and planning

### Handoff

Passing a chore to someone else by name. Write who owns it and when they accepted. Seeing a bucket is not the same as checking and filling it. [Make every handoff a named handoff](https://showprepnotes.com/parent-handoff)

### Observation

What you actually saw, written before you interpret it. Feed left in a pan is an observation, not a diagnosis. [Help a young exhibitor describe a concern](https://showprepnotes.com/ask-the-vet)

### Breeding window

A broad range of dates counted forward from a known breeding date for goats or sheep. A calendar cannot confirm pregnancy or predict an individual birth. [Breeding window and fair planner](https://showprepnotes.com/tools)
