A Calm Six-Week Countdown to Fair Day
Editorial team · Published October 20, 2026
Fair week has a way of arriving faster than expected. The fix isn't working harder in the last three days - it's spreading the work out. Here's a six-week countdown built from the preparation steps university extension 4-H guides recommend, so the week itself is mostly packing and nerves.
Weeks 6-5: Goals and ground rules
NDSU's 4-H showmanship guide says doing well "starts at home with setting goals." This is the week to pull up your show's premium book or rules page and confirm the details that shape everything else: entry deadlines, health paperwork requirements, and the grooming and fitting rules for your species. Extension guides note that fitting rules differ by show, so check the specific exhibition you're entering rather than assuming last year's rules apply.
Weeks 4-3: Daily handling
This is the practice window. Extension guides recommend regular halter work and practicing the set-up until it's routine. One tip worth stealing from the NDSU guide: have a family member or friend walk up and handle your animal the way a judge will. An animal that's calm under a stranger's hands is made in these weeks, not in the warm-up ring. If you'll use a show halter, switch to it now so the fit is familiar.
Week 2: Grooming ramp-up
Keep the coat clean and free of dust, bedding, and manure - the appearance standard judges expect, per the NDSU guide. This is also when the guide recommends staying on top of external parasite control (lice, ticks, mites, flies). Hold off on final clipping: the guide cautions against trimming too far ahead of the exhibition, since incomplete or grown-out clipping can affect placings.
Week 1: Clip, pack, breathe
Do the final clip within the window your show's rules allow. Pack the show box (see our show box checklist post) and confirm transport, arrival times, and where your stall or pen assignment will be posted. Then stop adding new things - the last week is for polishing what your animal already knows.
Run the countdown with PawLine
Six weeks of dates is exactly the kind of thing that lives better in an app than on a feed-room whiteboard. In PawLine you can log each practice session, keep the show's rule details and deadlines with your animal's notes, and look back after the fair at what actually got done. You can find it in the PawLine app.
